My magna-doodle lasted for about a year before the glue started disintegrating.
As to storing detail, its no problem. Just stick a small slate to the back
of it and Voila! You have the means to store more stuff. You could even rig
up a pencil with a small magnet on the other end so you can use the same
'pencil' for both sides.
But that, of course, comes round again to which pencil to use - and which
ones stay whole for more than a dive or two.
