One topic that has gone around scuba-uk for ages now is the use of a pocket magna doodle. It's a small version of an etch-a-sketch that used to be around ages ago and can be bought from toy shops. Not sure how that translates - basically it's a plastic box about 6x4 inches and only about 1/4 inch thick. It's filled with iron filings and the front cover is clearish. The 'pencil' in a magnet that pulls the iron filings to the front - hence writing. Easily wiped clear. We thought we'd give it a go - it's proved successful so far upto 30m (100ft). It's not much good for retaining run times but brilliant for the quick conversation that no amount of signalling seems to be abel to cope with. I think scubapro have just brought one out with a slate on the back but it costs about 5 times what the kiddies magna doodle version does. Not sure how long it will last but it has to be longer than the pencil and at only 4 pounds not too expensive to replace say every few months. Sue SD1621@gg*.co*.uk*
