Yeah, but you cavers use gap reels that'd never get you all the way out
of a cave either.  There might be an application for a pony in some
circumstances, eg. if you're solo or working aways away from the rest of
your team (the latter never happens up here in the viz we get) and need
something redundant that'll get you over to a larger supply, or perhaps
directly up in openwater to a depth at which you can switch to your deco
mix.

Certainly in the normal tech situation (diving with a team, using
double-outlet manifolds) there's no real need for one, and in any event
you have to balance the weight and bulk of a bit of gear against the
probability of really needing it.

If it is, then something horrible is happening to it on the way into
Lake Huron.  We've been seeing 10 to 20 foot visibility.
