Subject: NC Deep Dive 6/4/96
I've seen some of the message traffic on the June 4 Deep Dive attempt by Ken
Clayton and Doug Summerhill. I'm astounded by some of the comments.

First, here is a quote from the list subcribe message I received when I joined
the list: "Readers have also agreed that the use of offensive language insults,
or threats is not appropriate on this list, no matter how valid your point may
be. Use of language consistent with public speaking is required. Please note
that everything you post is archived with your name on it and may be searched
and reviewed for many years in the future."

I've never seen more offensive and insulting comments directed at a person (in
this case, persons - plural) on any network forum.

Second, I was on the boat for the first attempt to dive this wreck 5/95 and when
Doug was lost 6/4/96. I was there (in a photojournalist mode) and have detailed
notes of what happened, when it happened, responses to interview questions, etc.
I have photographs of boat activities (equipment and setup) and underwater as
Ken and Doug staged for the dive and their descent through about 100fsw. I was
the only one in the water during the descent and the photos show Ken leading and
Doug taping.

What I don't have is evidence of what happened at depth. I know what the dive
plan was and I know what was reported immediately post-dive.

I know what the weather was doing, the seas, the water temp, underwater vis,
current, etc. I know what the Captain did, the mate, the support diver and
Doug's girlfriend (not wife). I have photos of Doug's dive plan options for 1
minute, 1 minute and 5 minute bottom times.

Doug was rested and both divers were well-hydrated. Both seemed comfortable and
confident. There were no clues that either diver had a mistrust for his partner;
they'd done numerous deep dives together.

The circumstances surrounding this dive were as close to perfect as something
like this could be given the budget.

But, the fact is, Doug Summerhill, a competent and experienced deep gas diver
and good guy died and we'll likely never know why unless his video camera (a
small Hi-8 or 8mm video camera in a small cylindrical housing) is recovered and
documents the problem.
