Generally, when picking up divers, the engines should be in neutral. There really isn't an excuse, since weather so bad that the boat needed to have it's engines running for it's own safety would wipe out any diving. So someone either wasn't aware of the divers - bad seamanship - or wasn't running the boat properly - bad seamanship. Granted if a diver swam straight up under a boat and into the prop there's not a lot the skipper could do. Drifting deco is no big deal, the boat hangs clear till you surface then moves in and picks you up, using wind to control his speed. Big boats are harder to manouvre, which is why a decent outfit will consider running an inflatable, but they are not so hard to manouvre that it's impossible to approach divers and stop in neutral. Even if you are using a buoy, SOP is for the boat to hang clear till you reach it, then move in to collect you. IME of course... Jason
