Subject: SCUBA instruction mailing list
I am sending this message from a different account than the one I
normally use, so that any replies will be kept separate from my
regular personal E-mail. I assure everyone that this is not a crank
or a forgery :-).

Anyway, I have been thinking for some time about starting a forum
where interested parties could discuss issues that were relevant to
any/all aspects of SCUBA instruction. I seem to recall that Mike
Zimmerman got some "write-in" interest in creating a newsgroup for
this purpose, when he proposed the rec.scuba reorg last year. At this
time, a mailing list seems like the more appropriate choice, but I
might be talked into doing a formal newsgroup RFD (see below).

The mailing list would not necessarily be restricted to SCUBA
instructors, but I expect that most of the participants would somehow
be directly involved in teaching. The list would be moderated, and
probably would be issued in digest form, unless the amount of traffic
(and editing thereof) became unmanageable. At that point, perhaps we
could look at having it converted to a newsgroup.

The justification for having a moderated list is to try and maintain
high quality, focused discussions, and to try and avoid a lot of
pointless bickering. In particular, the types of postings that would
be seriously "curtailed" would be advertisements (of course :-), and
"agency wars" (polite, reasoned discussions that compared agency
standards or procedures against one another would be OK, though). I
would serve as the moderator of the list, unless there were strenuous
objections to that.

Any person who was interested in SCUBA instruction would be welcome
on the list, regardless of agency affiliation - this would include
AIs, basic "Openwater" instructors, etc, right on up through
instructors in the more "technical" disciplines.

If there is any interest in this, then please let me know.
