SUB AQUA FLAME CONTROL

Dear List Members,

For every 40 or 50 positive responses we get to our SUB AQUA postings we
usually get one polite objection and one caffeined -out guy trying to pick a bar
fight. In deference to the polite and thoughtful member of this list who
objected to our listing SUB AQUA's table of contents here, I'd like to discuss
that for a moment.

We consider that what we publish is news and newsworthy. Because this list is
about current events in our world we consider it a public service to let our
friends know what stories we've been covering. Those who read SUB AQUA know that
we're no more self-promoting than the next guy, and we have the quality of
material to justify a loyal following of the inner circle.

Dive magazines don't make a whole lot of money (Rodale's has lost 14 million,
aquaCorps folded, and the others are slashing their advertising rate cards). So
those few specialty magazines who publish because they are aficionados and wish
to improve the safety and information base of their readers, struggle to reach
qualified audiences. For the most part members of this list have thanked us for
letting them know SUB AQUA exists. I understand and apologize for the annoyance
some folks feel about getting just one too many messages in their mailboxes.

If you don't like the fact that I'm enthusiastic about SUB AQUA, tough. It is
the best magazine of its kind, and it's a ton of work and sacrifice to put it
out consistently.

Here's the deal. If a majority of list members prefer that SUB AQUA not list
its table of contents here as a service, then we won't. We'll put it up on a web
site or direct list members to a place on CompuServe and AOL where the sysops
have been more than happy to make our information available. But I didn't think
you'd want AOL guys to hear about anything before you did.

We enjoy participating in this list and publish SUB AQUA because we love diving.
The more people who know about it, we believe, the better for diving at large.

Sincerely,

Joel Silverstein,
PUBLISHER, SUB AQUA
