Sorry to use these lists to carry bad news, but they provide a good way to get this information out to the Australian divers interstate who may not have heard otherwise. Pat Bowring died on Friday. He was with two others commencing a dive on the wreck of the Koputai (79m) off Bondi. He began his descent, but returned to the surface after only reaching 6 to 10m (by reports I have heard - the papers have reported reaching 20m). At the surface he appeared to be in some distress, and was away from the shotline and mermaid line. He drifted from the boat, and a person on the boat dived in to render assistance, but was unable to reach him before he went under, and was not seen again. His companions completed their descent, but returned to the surface on finding he was not with them at the bottom. His drysuit was recovered on the bottom yesterday by two searchers, who reported other gear also scattered about, but there is no sign of his body. The suit is being examined. People are only able to speculate as to the cause of death at this stage. Greg Ryan gregr@cs*.su*.oz*.au*
