Hey all..
yep, it's pretty scary that someone who's an AI, or already a
divemaster and in training to be an instructor, can have less than 100
dives. Unlike a DM, AI's can indoctrinate the ways of (insert favorite
agency to bash) as long as there is an instructor around.
I personally waited until I had 100 dives before entering a DM program -
and though I was expecting quite the opposite, I was the second most
experienced diver in a class of seven (*Definitely* the most "tech"
experience, whatever that means). A couple of folks were quite upset when
PADI (oops, there I go, biting the hand...) changed their standards and
required sixty logged dives instead of, now hold your breath and imagine
the "DM" on the last diveboat you were on, 20!
Yikes.
To be fair, lots of these folks failed various parts of the DM classes or
tests, and therefore are still in training...me, I haven't taken helped
with a couple classes or taken the "$dive trip$" required by my shop for
certification, so I'm in the same boat but feel better with more experience
and am a better buddy for the DM classes and scenarios. I think there
should be virtually no requirements for Rescue Diver for this reason.
On the other thread, I've been narc'd 2 times, the first a
terrifying, mind-addling paranoid experience on the MARS at 150' off
Massachusetts (who the *Hell* let me on the boat that day, with 15 dives??)
and the second a more insidious, warm-fuzzy narc on the wall off San
Salvador at 120'. I was hung over in the Bahamas, which I think made it
strike so shallow - no flames, we all did dumb things in college - but it
was dangerous and scary after the fact. I don't like to dive much over
that depth now. Call me a weenie, I'm on this list 'cause I like long
bottom times...
My (more than) 2 cents
