This is one of the things I'd like to learn more about. I know that commercial divers slow the rate of descent to alleviate HPNS; however they generally take 24 hours to reach 500 feet (well, I've been told 48 hours to reach 1000 feet - does anyone know if they use the same rate for 500 feet?) Anyway, it's obvious that rates *that* slow are unreasonable for sub-saturation dives. The question I have is, will there be a meaningful difference in HPNS between rates of 100 fpm, 60 fpm, and 15 fpm (George Irvine suggested the latter rate would be useful, and it is within reason, but I dont know what he based that rate on). Another solution is to increase the PN2, as narcosis seems to counteract the affect of HPNS. Of course, there has to be a balance struck for optimal diver performance. I'll keep y'all posted of any anecdotal observations I make in the future. Aloha, Rich
