I would be greatful for any informed comment regarding the following incident.
The main point of interest is was this DCI and if so, why.
The diver conserned is male, 35 years old, has a few thousand dives behind him,
considers a dive to 35m as routeen, was with 6 others who were all training but
unefected, was not carying out any work at depth and is now feeling fine.

Start Report.....

Sunday, 15th May 1994

2 dives both within tables of Solution & Eon computers,
profiles are below. No ascent rate warnings.

1st to 7.3m for 19.5 mins on air
 SI of 24 mins -
 2nd to 35.7m for 36.5 mins on 32% O2 switching to 60% O2 at 6m.

Surfaced at 11.50 am on Sunday

At 8.30pm on Monday, 32 and a half hours later, I was opening the car door and
thought I had ricked my back as I had a pain central in the small of my back.
The pain, although bearable, got progressively worse when at 9.30pm, I had an
urge to urinate although, on relieving the urge, my bladder was not full and I
found I had to hold on to a support and nearly passed out. I walked a few
yards and found that my legs were trembling and weak. I felt it better to lie
down on the floor before I fell down where again, I nearly passed out. A
couple of minutes later, I got up and went into another room and sat down. My
hands were trembling and I could not hold a piece of paper steady enough to
read. I had slight tingling on the left side of my lips which spread to the
left side of my face and it felt a bit numb although I still had feeling; it
was like a dentist's anesthetic just as it wears off. I also had a faint
ringing in my left ear.

At about 10.30pm, I thought O2 would be a good idea and called for an ambulance
and asked for O2 which I was given through a constant feed mask running at
about 15l O2 per minute. I remained on this until for about an hour by which
time I had been in the hospital for about half an hour. I was then given a
different mask with a reservoir bag attached. Throughout this time I was
running through my dive profile but was having difficulty in doing simple
calculations. I recall at least 3 basic neurological examinations during one
of which I was asked how many pens I could see whilst they were about 18 inches
straight in front of me and I was seeing double although when they were moved to
left and right, I was OK; I felt this was an inability to focus rather than
blurred vision. At 1.20am, my wife came to visit me and she said that I was
"out of it". I do not remember feeling confused but I did loose my ability to
reason and felt a little detached. At about 2.30, I was transferred to a ward
where I remained on O2 and slept until 6.45am. I was woken every 2 hours and
my responses were checked as well as my pulse and blood pressure. By 8am, all
the symptoms had gone except the back pain and a hardly perceptible numbness to
the left side of my face so I stopped the O2 and discharged myself.

By Wednesday evening the back pain had almost gone but it was still a bit
stiff.
