No doubt you have all experienced a recent problem with the mailing
list. I recently received multiple copies of some mail causing a disk
quota overrun, and JR Oldroyd's post makes it clear that I was not the
only one. After checking around I believe I have figured out what the
problem was; I am writing to explain and (in a way) apologize.

Late Sunday night/Monday morning, a lightning strike destroyed the
physical connection between my local system and the Internet service
node to which it is connected. Our system stayed up but could not
connect to the outside; as a result, mail to addresses on this system
was returned to the sender as undeliverable. Unfortunately, mail to
me from techdiver was apparently returned to techdiver, which
apparently accepted it as incoming mail and sent it out to the list
(including me!). This set up a positive feedback in which mail was
sent to me, bounced back to the list, resent across the list to
everyone including me, rebounced back to the list, resent across the
list ..... . In other words, it's our (GU's) fault! Sorry!

My sysop tells me the problem has been corrected, and the infinite
mail loop has hopefully by now run its course. I can only imagine what
a hassle this has been to everyone (I stopped getting mail when my
750KB quota filled, but JR got 7MB of the stuff; god knows how long it
actually went on!). I am only a user here, not the sysop, and I'm
certainly not in charge of lightning, but I still feel a little bit
responsible. I'd like to offer an (unofficial) apology from
Georgetown and myself; I hope everyone has recovered without too much
disruption.

Best to all -
