I would be curious to know if the diver that set the world record looked at CCR and SCR and made the decision or did he have access to only a SCR. Bill Stone's work in caves is done entirely with CCR units (you already know this) and the sum of all distances travelled in caves by CCR units today probably far exceeds that of the world record holder you refer to. Did the SCR unit that was used for the record have O2 sensors on board? I like some SCR units and would modify and shrink one in particular as a bailout unit if my CCR failed in a manner that required me to bail. I will say with respect to the Odessey rebreather that has gone out of business regardless of what Dan Volker says, that it might reappear as a unit marketed by a well known diving company whose name begins with the letter O. Sources say that the O company recently lost a lawsuit that necessitated its withdrawing a rebreather unit that it had promised to the industry and had, in fact, built a couple of prototypes that were shown at the 1995 DEMA show. Negotiations are underway at this moment and the O company and Odessey might be getting together- but it is not a done deal yet. Please Please, this is a secret and should not be shared by anyone not on this list. Four people shared this information with me at BTS this weekend, after first telling me that it was a secret. Dave Schubert of Dive USA verified that negotiations between a "major" and Odessey was taking place but did not divulge any specifics at all. I was told by others that the O company wants the inventor/designer of the Odessey to produce a smaller unit- that for my purposes of bailout- would be closer to something of use for me. I was also told that as of this weekend past there was no deal between the O company and Odessey. Further, if what I was told is true, then if another backer is not forthcoming for Odessey, the unit- as a commercial venture- ain't going to happen. Why is that? Until you do, they don't work, except in the applicaton > they were originally designed for, and then only the ones that the miltitary > uses, or the civilian versions thereof. The rest are absolute trash. - G >
