Yes - tuck the loop into the waistband of your BC (or perhaps your
weightbelt - I personally prefer the BC).

I have seen the ball joint swivel you described (don't like it
myself), and also a "hard" elbow with a single swivel (making a total
of two swivels at the second stage end - I'm currently using one of
these, but am not totally happy with it). There are probably elbows
with no swivels, which I would gladly use if I could find one.
