Under heavy use in sea water, the grease helps prevent corrosion from
forming inside the ambient pressure chamber. This used to be a relatively
big problem for me diving in the tropics until I added the SPEC to my
SP Mk-10s. For me, the question is why doesn't everyone use the stuff.

I once had an Oceanic regulator "bottom out" (i.e., not deliver gas) at
about 320 feet. When I got back to the surface, I discovered the ambient
pressure chamber was dry. The rubber diaphragm for the environmental
doohicky prevented water from getting into the ambient pressure chamber,
so when the diapragm bottomed out on the spring nut, the reg stopped
compensating for ambient pressure increase. I later learned that the
chamber was supposed to have been filled with alcohol to transmit the
water pressure (it wasn't my regulator), but the alcohol had apparently
evaporated off. It seems to me this would be a potential problem for any
regulator that uses alcohol. At least the grease doesn't evaporate.

How so? I have not had any problem with the Mk-10's in either environment.
