The more I integrate the things I learn from people like Eric Maiken and others with my real-world experiences over the years, the less convinced I am of the correlation between dissolved N2 (as measured by theoretical compartments with different half-times) and probability of DCI. The imporant things for avoiding DCI in my experience are: 1) ascent pattern (slow initial ascent and deep safety stops) 2) low exertion during the bottom portion of the dive 3) high inspired PO2 (>1 atm) during the shallower decompression stops I have done many many dives while in excellent shape, and many dives while in terrible physical shape, and I have observed no clear correlation with respect to DCI. When I'm in terrible shape, I'm more comfortable (thermally) on the decompression line without a wetsuit; however, from the things I've read from Tom Mount, George, Robb, and others, I am increasingly convinced that there are many other advantages to being in good shape even if there is no correlation with DCI.
