FWIW, I agree with Richard on this one. (His point, in a nutshell, was that something other than DCS is affecting the fish migrating upstream in the Northwest.) It's been pretty well established that water supersaturated with DO is incompatible with healthy salmonids. It's also been pretty well established that many (possibly most) of the fishways built in the Pacific Northwest were built in such a way that the fish expire not because they can't make their way upstream against the current, but because there are too many bubbles in the water (i.e., not enough water to allow them to respire O2 through the gills). I could speculate about why bubble formations in the skin might be symptomatic of an asphyxiating migratory fish, but suffice it to say that too much air and too little water makes for a sick fish.
