Folks,

I run the TechDiver mailing list, as well as the TechDiver and Cavers
archives.

As those of you who have been on the TechDiver list will know, I leave
the list and it's contents to itself and do not interfere with things.
I do not have the time, or the interest, to act as a list policeman.

Unfortunately, this approach does mean that we all have to suffer when a
few small indivuduals abuse the list and cause annoyance for the rest of
us. Several months back, this happened with folk sending abusive
messages, now this is happening with forgeries.

The message recently posted under my name was not sent by me, although
it was derived from a (very different) message that I did sent to a
group of only four individuals. The fact that one of those four allowed
personal mail that I sent to them to be modified in such an offensive
manner and then re-mailed to the whole mailing list, clearly shows the
type of people that we are having to put up with.

You will note that I have added a digital signature to this message.
Please feel free to verify the signature -- my public key is available
on the MIT key server, and it is also available by fingering
jr@te*.ne*. I will sign all future messages -- please ignore all
messages purporting to be from me that do not contain a valid signature.

As the old-timers here will know, I am not a list policeman. I offer
my computer resources as well as my network bandwidth for use by the
diving community as a benefit to all. If folk keep on abusing it, my
inclination remains, as always, that I will simply shut the whole thing
off.

I do not know, nor care, who is (or are) the originators of these
recent forgeries. I hope that anyone who does know is able to use
their infulence to get the offendors to stop. And I hope it is soon,
because I have to say that I could use that network bandwith for
other purposes right now, so i don't need much more of an excuse,
folks.

	-jr
