Subject: Introduction/New subscriber
Per the listserver's response to my subscription request, I guess I should have
introduced
myself to your forum.

I am new and don't consider myself a technical diver and won't until I have
obtained far more
knowledge and, more importantly, experience. My reason for being here is to
learn. I intend
to learn well and correctly so I don't have to un-learn and re-learn later. To
this end I will
listen more than speak and, when appropriate, will try to ask only pertinent
questions. I once
made huge strides as a racquetball player when I became willing to play people
that could
handily kick my ass.

I am IANTD nitrox certified and am currently negotiating arrangements with
Peter Shultz
(American Dive Center) and my 'group' to complete the TDI advanced nitrox and
deep diving
courses this spring. Within the next year or so, I plan to obtain cavern and
then cave
training. This is not because I plan to give up reef dives for caves but
because the skills
taught in the cave diving environment seem to be among the most exhaustive and
highly
developed. My intent is to always be very realistic about how skilled and well
prepared I am
for any particular dive and to continually evolve and improve. Furthermore, I
am not "in a
hurry" to gain these or other certifications (or wetsuit patches). Even at
this early stage of
my diving, I see that dive experience is as important as--and goes hand in hand
with--the
training and knowledge so I am diving at every opportunity. It is the
knowledge aspect that I
wish to utilize the techdiver resource for.

For those of you that may aim your blowtorches my way, feel free. I am of the
opinion that the
information available here is far too valuable to be scared off by personal
insults. Besides,
I'm a believer in the 'resolution by conflict' concept anyway. Resort to
name-calling and
you've pretty well thrown in the towel. My primary dive buddy and mentor was
trained by people
known and well regarded in your community (add'l name-dropping avoided) so I'm
already
accustomed to abuse (i.e. constructive criticism). Test me if you will, but
you'll find I'm
driven by neither ego or machismo.

Thanks for your tolerance, your expertise, and your willingness to share it.
