To add to what Steve Irving has already said, a couple of points:
1) the newer 100's and the Mako have an internal cuff to accept the barrel
o-ring onthe 100/Mako motor that was not presesnt in the 3x or old 100 version.
This is a big help if you use the new motor, useles if you have the old cone
that has only the surface o-ring. HOWEVER, it is actually better to use the old
motor, as the burn time is 20 minutes longer, and you really do not need the
speed for shallow diving, the only way these things should really be used.
2) BLOW UPS - batteries can offgas at any time, and the biggest culprit in
blowup is the cracking of the lower bulkhesd due to taking the scooter too
deep,
even with "modifications" . The hydrogen is ignited by the relay or motor when
you hit the trigger.
3) As Steve pointed out, you can convert the scooters. I would just take
the lower end of the 3x in tact, remove the bulkead, and put the middle section
and the new lid on. This will include a metal bulkhead, a special two sided
middle bulkhead to accept tht lid and the mid-section, and an upper bulkhead
which snaps to the metal battery box to get the exact support necessary to keep
the scooter from egging uder pressure.
4) If you realy want to get cute, like me, you can actually take the
screws that hold the metal plate out, and the four aluminum rods will fit right
in and be the exact length to hold the top bulkhead (same on both scooters, but
without the sonic taps) so that you do not need the metal box, thus saving
enough weight to make the scooter dead neutral in fresh water with Yuasa 18's.
However, you must then use hollow spaces to EXACTLY position the 3x style
bulkheads (the 100/Mako's have not holes) to mate perfectly along the hull
where
they need to be to support it. You cn eyball this by droppn the bulkead into
the
lid upside down and then measuring how far it wil go. The lower bulkead then
needs to be held down by foam blocks, or it will ride up and the scooter will
egg.
5) The easy way out is to put smaller batteries in your 3x (15 ah) and
it
will be properly balanced, and then Hogarthanize your gear, so that you will
get
the same distance as the junk divers with less effort. Remember, Gavin put the
end of the line in most of the caves you guys dive with an old tekna and small
batteries, or swimming. - G
