Hi fellow divers, I while ago i started a thread on scuba-l about what to do when your computer for one reason or another fails in the middle of a dive. (unlikely but .... Murphy likes diving also!) The question was : can one continue the dive on multilevel tables ? (if you have a depth gauge and a timer) Of course the easy way out is to abort the dive , do safety stops and wait on surface until offgassed to start again with a fresh computer or on tables. But suppose you are on a luxury dive safari tour and 3 more dives are scheduled before going back on land again. I summerize (try to) the feedback of the thread to some extent as follows : - In order to continue one has to rely heavily on memory (where was i at the time of failure) and since this is not so reliable one should abort the dive and do safety stops. - You cannot adequately and safely map a computer dive profile to pressure groups on a table. - Some divers 'follow' their computers (do you plan a dive and dive the plan ?) : from computers to tables ... it should be the opposite way ! I selected some options which seems safe to continue the dive. Maybe you have something to add or comment about. Here are the 'few' SAFE options besides bailing out : - You plan your dives on a table (multilevel) or on a PC and use your computer as backup or diveplan-check-device and having a timer and depth gauge you can safely continue the dive if you dive according your plan. (you need to have the plan with you on a slate for instance) You can do other dives using the same table but if you want to check your diveplan you need another computer and because a new computer starts with zero ongassing you should be completely offgassed. NEVER NEVER NEVER use someone elses computer !!!!! - If you do not use tables , you can continue if you use a backup computer and you have that with you on any dive you make. Besides I think that if you dive EAN you should set both computers to the same mixture right ? (this is another risk factor to account for !) Maybe there exists other SAFE ways .. I wonder. Anyone out there ? Meanwhile happy SAFE diving ! -- ________________________________________________________________ Xavier Merlin #### ########### ## ## ## ## Kredietbank NV ## ## ## ## 8484 Projectgroep IBIS Technisch ##### ######## Havenlaan 2 ## ## ## ## B-1210 Brussel ## ## ## ## Belgium #### ########### Tel +32 (2) 422 7487 Fax +32 (2) 422 8106 E-mail u18218@kb*.be* ________________________________________________________________
