In the early days of flying, there wasn't much to crash upon and most only 
killed the pilot.

My real point here is the liability problem (as you also pointed out in a
recent 
post).  While it is true that if you die on a rebreather you only kill
yourself, 
an uproar about how dangerous these things are and a few law suits by widows
and 
children and we could find ourselves in a pickle.
