AP ------------ Grand Bahama Island, Bahamas Two certified cave divers -- one a scuba instructor, the other a former commercial diver on Gulf Coast oil rigs -- died while exploring an underwater chamber off Grand Bahama Island. Michael Brown, 37, and Randy Smith, 30 were part of a 10 person group from Ft Meyers that had chartered the SHEAR WATER out of Riviera Beach for a four day dive trip to the Bahamas. While diving in waters near Freeport, they entered a blue hole that lead to a cave in about 120 feet of water, said Ken Johnson, a crew member on the SHEAR WATER. "these guys were techincal divers," Johnson said. "They were the most experienced individuals in the group" But the two veteran scuba divers did not leave a trailing rope to the cave entrance or bring enough lights into the dark cavern, violating cave diving rules and leaving themselves vulnerable for accidents, Johnson said. Bahamian authorities are investigating the cause of the Friday accident. An autopsy was scheduled for today in Freeport. Meanwhile, Joseph Michael DiLeonardo, 20, of North Miami Beach, was found unconscious Saturday by three fellow divers in water 34 feet deep about a half mile of Fort Lauderdale, said Broward County sheriff's deputies. The diver, who was not certified, was revived twice but died while being transferred from Hollywood Memorial Hospital to Mercy Hospital in Miami. ______________________ interesting articles..... shows certification doesn't always make a diver too smart, huh? karen
