I'll relate what my IANTD instructor taught us, and he can flame me if I get it wrong. To deploy the lift bag, hold the bag and reel at arms length while giving it a bit of air, as it acends, allow the line to pass under the opposite glove, also fully extended (the line makes a 90 degree angle here). this keeps the line smooth enough not to dump, but fast enough not to pull you up. Be ready to let go if the ^%$# thing binds up. Hooking on a second reel sounds like a good idea.
