Subject: Holanthias borbonius

Hi folks,

A German friend of mine, Helmut Debelius, sent me an article on
"fairy basslets" (also known as "Anthias" - pretty little relatives of
groupers found on coral reefs). Included in this article is a superb
photograph of a fish called "Holanthias borbonius" (I know it sounds
silly, but I promise I'm not making this up).

Until last December, I had thought this fish had never been seen
by divers, because it is restricted to extremely deep depths (usually in
excess of 500 feet). I found a group of them (and collected one) at the
"shallow" depth of 420 feet on my recent PNG trip. The photo in the
article sent to me by Helmut is clearly not an aquarium photo, and was
obviously not taken by a submersible. Does anyone on this list know
anyhting about trimix divers taking fish pictures way down deep? The
range of this species is Japan (where the photo *might* have been taken,
but the color form doesn't quite match the Japanese form) through to
South Africa.

Thanks.

Aloha,
Rich
