After two seasons of bad weather which has kept our main cave
system, Leon Sinks, blacked out, we are finally able to begin exercising
our Federal permits with an exploration of Big Dismal Sink in the
Leon Sinks Geological Area of the Appalacciacola National Forest.

WKPP will go in with full crew this weekend to begin this work.
Big Dismal is a sink that collapsed at the turn of the century duing
a drought, and left a 100 foot deep depression between the ground level
and the water level. When clear, it is a beautiful blue sink, with
upstream springs, a deep upstream conduit believed to run for miles,
and a downstream labyrinth that has an upstream/downstream junction
a short wasy out (3500 feet) where a clear upstream gives way to a
deep donwstream, which we believe is the other end of the Bitter End
tunnel which we discovered in 1993, and added 3500 feet of line to
before the system went down on us, putting our distance from Cheryl
at about 8000 at 240 . The distance between the two is probably about
14000 feet, but we will soon find out.

The nice thing about this cave is that all of the deep tunnels
are untouched, as the previous crew only wanted a distance record, so did
not fool with the stuff we like (Tallahasee Power Cave). The cave also has
abundant tunnel in the 130 reange for our guys who like the shallower stuff.
The bad thing is getting gear down 100 feet to the water. We will find out
who the real serious players are now. In order to dive the rest of the
sinks in the Forest, for which we also hold the permits, the dues will
be paid at Big D.

We will have filming operations going on above water. Anyone who wants
to walk back to watch is welcome, but this is a severely restricted site,
and only WKPP regulars will be used - each person is prepermitted under my
permit and has all papers and insurance on file with the Government. -G
