I don't think this post made it through before so I'm trying again. I just had my first experience of coming up in the Atlantic with no pickup boat in sight. I had done about 1/2 hour of deco drifting under my lift bag. Pickup boat had planned to follow us, not anchored. No one was around to hear my whistle. Apparently, they had to go get another diver who had some problems. It's a lonely float when the wind is pushing you away from shore and you're by yourself. For the first time, carrying smoke flares and one of those 6' inflatable orange tubes-preferably with radar reflection Eventually, a sportfisherman passed by and apparently radioed my location. It would have been nicer if he had stopped to help me or indicated that he had seen me when I was frantically waving at him. I don't need to hear "don't dive alone" stuff as I had discussed me exact dive plan and run time with the captain. If I'd been with someone else, it would have been two of us lost. I'd like to hear thoughts on what "I'm over here" gear people carry to deal with similar situations. Extra gear doesn't seem like overkill anymore. TIA, Tom
