Phil, your questions must not be stupid or everyone would
have the answer.

Breathing the reg you share is the best way for all types of
diving. The hose can be shorter for standard open water, or it
can be a long hose as you see fit. Standard open water to me means
single 80 one first stage, no overheads.

You need not worry about being choked any more tha you would if
someone grapbed the short hose from your mouth from the left side -
it is still around your neck, so to speak. Some people had thought
that the hose was twice around the neck. This came from the people
who were told to buy nine foot hoses for scootering - completely
unnecessary. This, they thought, would allow a side by side ride
out of the cave, kind of like a nice horseback ride in the country.
For the answer to this, I suggest you read "CQB" by Mark Lonsdale,
and see the part about "High Kicks in the Real World".

To execute this maneuver, just pass the reg forward -everything
takes care of itself. One clue to efficiency here is the fact that
nobody can describe any other way in five words. What does that tell
you , let's say , if you were really in trouble?
