I don't recall the Crea episode. I am aware of Joel's case. By all of the normal appearances, I can say that it certainly appears to have come from compuserve.com (high degree of confidence) but not necessarily from Joel himself - could have been any compuserve user (and we have quite a few here). I don't want to elaborate too much (thought it isn't hard to figure out); I do not want to make it easier for more people to fake messages. You can nail it down to the real originator but you need the co-operation of a node manager on the originating end and it wasn't worth my time or effort in this case (though I do this routinely in my job for cases involving our domain).
