I've recently found several software systems that can turn your laptop computer into a large screen plotter when interfaced with a GPS, DGPS, or Loran. In the lower resolution scales NOAA charts can be displayed up to twice the resolution of the charts each of which may be different. In the plotting mode using Lat/Lon lines the resolution can be such that a 4" grid = about 400ft. Thus multiple plots can be made outlining the wreck and allowing one to select the dead center of the wreck for his permanent DGPS waypoint. The anchor would not be likely to miss the target with such a fix of the wreck's position. I'm told that many small boat owners use laptops, but I'm concerned that the "bumps in the road" may damage the hard disk; does anyone have any experience in using a laptop on a small boat (like 25-30ft) and if so what precautions do you take to dampen the shock etc.? If anyone's interested in the software, I'll be happy to supply more details in that regard. But now that we have DGPS this looks like it's a great nav. system at a "reasonable" price if I don't ruin my laptop in the process. Harold H.
