WKPP divers Larry Care and Q. Jones helped me collect samples for
microorganism analysis in Wakulla. These guys were a great help, running
reels and watching out for me as I ventured off the line in search of
interesting samples.

At 280 ft. there is no time to screw around with bags of sample
tubes trying to pick out tube #n+1 so I came up with a slick way to carry
my sample tubes. The device is designed for use with standard 50ml screw
top plastic sterile conical tubes found in most laboratories. Basically a
PVC pipe cut to a length that a six-pack of tubes will fit in. The tubes
are held in the pipe with a hose clamp and
tire rubber on each end with a small hole through which the tubes are
pushed in. The design is similar to those pencils that use
interchangeable tips; when one is used the one from the top is put into
the bottom and that pushes the next one out. In this way the tubes can
be pre-numbered and sequentially dispensed. The six-pack is worn like
stage bottle. All sample tubes must be filled with sterile (autoclaved)
deionized water in a laminar flow hood prior to sample collection in
order to prevent collapse by water pressure at depth.

On Sun. we all went to look at a new sink. This is perhaps the most
beautiful cave I have ever seen. Larry Care and I followed the film crew
in behind the video lights and the view can only be described as
spectacular. Crackling blue water, pure white walls and tunnel 50-150
ft. wide at depths from 140 ft. to 210 ft. with at least 100 ft.
clearance top to bottom in many places. Larry and I checked out a
possible lead at about 190 ft. depth and then continued on to look at the
terminal rooms near the back of the cave.
