I doubt Tom's over-enthusiastic endorsement of anti-
oxidants is going to lead anyone to forgo some of their
decompression obligations in favour of bulk vitamins.
Especially the divers you profile (fat, hungover, short-
winded, and breaching like beluga whales). These kinds of
divers probably don't give a rat's arse about their health
and wellbeing. They're the ones *least* likely to be
interested in more exotic health care concepts.

I've been using antioxidants for years, and bulking up on
them before dives ever since I read about the connection
between CNS toxicity and free radicals. I notice neither
John Comley nor John Crea brought it to our attention that
(leaving DCI aside) antioxidants just might be useful for
stalling oxygen toxicity. I wonder if their scientific
discipline precludes them from speculating in public. If
so, then I reckon we need people like Tom, who are willing to
push a position ahead of the 'hard' evidence, otherwise
there'd be no debate on any subjects involving physiology,
chemistry or engineering.

Either the cavers and techdiver lists are arenas for open
debate and speculation including solid facts, wild notions
and half-assed ideas, y'know, warts'n all, and the
participants are smart enough to recognise that. Or we need
to be protected from speculation until an opinion has been
cleared for release by some higher authority. In which case,
what's the point?
