This is email from Phil White. I'm posting it here (at his request) so he isn't flooded with requests - besides I though it might be of general interest to this list... -Carl- ************************************************************************ PO Box 4243, Key West, FL. 33041 US p: 305.294.3540 f: 305.293.0729 tf:1.800.365.2655 aquaCorps The Journal For Diving Technology 26APR94 Dear Industry Member, I am writing to invite you to participate in a unique event toajor inroads into the self-contained diving marketplace. However, there appears to be a number of significant issues that have yet to be resolved including; market acceptance, liability, training and safety. These issues are likely to impact all of us involved or interested in rebreathers, and unless resolved, are likely to slow the dissemination and acceptance of this technology in the market. Hosted by aquaCorps Journal, the objective of this hands-on industry forum is to bring together manufacturers, training organizations, insurers, contractors, potential resellers, instructors, and professional users to discuss rebreather technology, and to hopefully resolve some of the outstanding issues and clear up the many myths that abound. By being pro-active, we can hopefully avoid some of the problems that have arisen with regards to other diving technologies, and in doing so, help establish the market for this emerging tool. Enclosed find a preliminary agenda and reservation form. Please note that space is limited to 100 people and we will be accepting registrations on a "FIRST COME FIRST SERVE" basis. If you have any questions please feel free to call me or one of the contact people below. I hope that you will be able to join us in what has all the makings of an historical event. This is the century to be pro-active about the future." Alan Kay, Stanford Computer Forum, 1989 What: Rebreather technology is poised to make major inroads into the self- contained diving marketplace, and yet a number of significant issues remain including; market acceptance, liability, training and safety. These issues impact all prospective vendors involved in rebreathers, and unless resolved, are likely to slow the dissemination and acceptance of the technology in the market. Hosted by aquaCorps Journal, the objective of this "invitation-only" hands-on workshop is to bring together rebreather and support vendors, training organizations, insurers, potential resellers, instructors, and professional user organizations i.e. law enforcement, photography, scientific, commercial and military, to discuss these and other relevant issues, and clear up the myths and misinformation that exists. By being pro-active, those involved stand to help chart a course for the future and in doing so, help establish the market for this emerging technology. Note that the front two rows of the meeting hall will be reserved for rebreather manufacturers to facilitate participation. 9:45-11:45 THE MYSTICAL ORDER OF REBREATHERS Designed to bring everyone into the loop, this session will clear up the many myths and misinformation regarding rebreathers. Including a review of where the technology has gone to where it can go, this session will answer questions, explore some of the innovations on the horizon, and offer an agenda for the future. Chair: Tracy Robinette, Divematics. Monday 23MAY: 12:00-1:30 PHYSIOLOGY LUNCH Though considerable work has been done on special mix tables, there is little field experience in non-military circles with regard to closed & semi-closed rebreather decompression procedures. In addition, other physiological issues, particularly CNS oxygen toxicity, and CO2 build-up are critical issues in rebreather diving. This luncheon session will explore what is known and review the relevant physiological issues. 1:45-3:45 DEFINING NEW USER APPLICATIONS This session will offer end user perspectives on semi-closed and closed circuit technology and its potential for use in consumer applications & environments and review the results of the aquaCorps Rebreather Survey. This session should generate a set of questions and issues to be addressed over the course of the workshop. 3:45-4:00 BREAK 4:00-6:30 REBREATHER TRAINING Closed circuit systems are not so much a breathing apparatus as they are a complex instrument. Requirements for effective use are a bit like flying an airplane. Training remains one of the most significant hurdles to overcome in bringing rebreather technology to the non-military market. This session will explore and identify some of the possible issues and problems associated with rebreather training and will hopefully offer some alternative approaches. MONDAY EVENING Open Night On The Town TUESDAY 24MAY 8:30- 10:00 TECHNOLOGY & STANDARDS This session will review the state of rebreather electronics, discuss technical specifications, what is possible, and offer a basic technical standard for non- military rebreather systems with the goal of arriving at a group consensus. (BREATHING RESISTANCE-COMPARISONS). 10:00-10:15 BREAK 10:15-12:30 RISK MANAGEMENT Product liability is critical to the successful implementation of rebreather technology in the US and other non-military markets. This session will explore the perceptions of vendors & insurers and flag issues and problems associated with the technology. 12:30-2:30 OPEN LUNCH 2:30- 5:30 CLOSING THE LOOP This wrap-up session will summarize the workshop findings, identify open issues, explore the formation of a rebreather association, and define follow-up steps for the community. - -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- - --------------------------- PO Box 4243, Key West, FL. 33041 US p: 305.294.3540 f: 305.293.0729 tf: 1.800.365.2655 aquaCorps The Journal For Diving Technology Key West REBREATHER Forum Sunday 22MAY 24MAY 1994 Registration* Name: ________________________________________ Company: ________________________________________ Address: ________________________________________ ________________________________________ Country: ________________________________________ Phone: ________________________________________ Fax: ________________________________________ Number of people attending the Forum: _______ (Forum registration is $175 per person) Amount enclosed: _______ Plan to participate in rebreather diving sessions: _______ (Y/N).
