I may have missed most of this thread, as the S/N ratio drove me off this list a month ago. However Rodney has been sending me the better "gems". George, I normally agree with you, but not this time. I gather you were discussing *open water* diving with trimix, and you agreed with Tom Mount's idea that manifolds should be a requirement. I know that many people are happy with a system where they can point to an item of equipment and say "if this fails, I will die". I'm not one of them. Cave practices are for *caves*, just as OW practices are for OW. You americans have found that manifolds do the job in your type of cave. Leave them there! Manifolds are just plain stupid in the open water environment. They *depend* on a tight buddy system, and while you may be able to manage that in a nice still friendly cave, you *cannot* do that on an ocean dive. If you think you can climb an anchor line in a 6 knot current while shareing gas (even with the silly 7 foot hose!) you are *nuts*. The drag on the hose *alone* would tear it out of your mouth! OW trimix is no place for the buddy system, and solo diving is no place for manifolds. Make no mistake, with a manifold system on a solo dive, a major failure will mean you *will* die. Cheers Jason =:)
