I'm a little upset. Are they now going to build rectangular submarine pressure hulls due to inherent strength of "flat-sided" pressure vessels? Actually there are some flat bulkheads inside submarines which separate compartments in the event of flooding that are DESIGNED to take submergence pressure. They are quite massive with the structure necessary to do so as hemispherical internal bulkheads would take up too much space. This is a design tradeoff. Later class submarines had fewer pressure rated internal bulkheads for several reasons, one of which was to reduce the weight of the submarine (it does no good if it only sinks!) Its been a few years from my years in the sub service and engineer at Electic Boat, but I think submarines are still somewhat round and not square? There must be a reason! Doug Chapman
