Subject: light failures
Hi again...
I've been kinda ignoring the thread on the dive rite lights up to
this point....I don't use them, nor plan to in the near future.
What caught my eye was the comments in regards to the engineering
of the lights. As an engineering student, I must make a comment on a
square pressure vessel, such as the light in question has.
By simple statics equations, the compressive stresses experienced
by a cylindrical light are generally distributed uniformly about the
cylinder. A square case has several sharp stress locations under the
same conditions. (You even see this in nature....ever seen a cubic
egg?...the egg wouldn't survive incubation.)
Just giving this a slight skim over, the logic as to why anyone would
produce a light like that, even if the batteries are used as bulkheads,
escapes me.
I'd need more information on the Dive Rite light in order to give
you all exact figures, but this is a first year engineering principle.
