I've been lurking around on the techdiver list for a few months and
decided (after been prompted) that eavesdropping is a bit rude, so
I'll introduce myself to you all.

Here goes:

Personal information: Gerrit Conradie, 28 years of age, lecturer in
electronic engineering, living near beatiful Cape Town in restless
South Africa.

NAUI Open water certified during December '92 at the insistence of a
friend and AI (who probably is on this list too, thanks W.) and AOW
certified during July '93. Didn't do any diving during the period
between certifications and found my interest waning, so I took the
advanced course. Since then I've been hooked and totally addicted to
this activity after studying things like decompression problems and
the psychology of diving. Considering that I've tried about
everything else at one time or another, that's something indeed as I
loose interest very soon in anything unstimulating. The reason for
not loosing interest, but the opposite, I attribute to the great
number of facets and problems in scuba diving. The neat gear and
giminajicks may also be a factor...

I'm trying to dive as regularly as possible, but only manage one
or two dives a week. The rest of the time I dream or talk about it.

During my diving career(!) I did some silly things, like attempting
a decompression dive on standard NAUI tables, which didn't quite work
out so well and also solo diving. Not implying that these activities
are stupid, only that it *is* with my level of experience and
equipment. These defined my limitations and prompted me to start a
quest for diving information and especially technical diving
techniques. For now, I'm limiting myself to the studying of marine
life, floating about, and seeking out new and interesting dive sites
along our coast.

Living a life as academic, I get the opportunity to define my own
projects and have since started work on the design and implementation
of a dive computer for interest sake and as a project for a student.
Also interested in various other devices associated with diving. The
inevitable joining of my addiction and work...

At the moment, and in the near future, the realm of technical diving
will be beyond my financial means, so I'm only here to assimilate new
and interesting diving information. The nearest I'll come to this
exciting field soon is probably with a EANx course through the IANTD
("what do you mean it isn't for everyone?":-) sometime this year.

Also in love with anything to do with the sea and water.

BTW, a great mailing list.

Dive responsibly.

- Gerrit
