Interesting.  I though you meant salt water initially and this is
not good for AL climbing gear even though the max. stresses are
low in your situation.  Fresh water pose no problem from the
ascenders point of view but a slew of issues must be considered:
directionality, ease of operation, the integrity of the rope
when the ascender grips it etc etc.

I have no real answer for that.
