Indeed, it was, and to some extent continues to be a habit of mine....but
as I have said in the past, I am perpetually moving towards more
conservative habits all the time.

Actually, only on one occassion has a person I have been diving with
received a DCS hit (it actually hit him while he was still on the
decompression line), and this person's diving habits at the time made me
look like a saint. Incidently, for the recordbooks, he was successfully
treated with IWR.

I hope people out there realize the reasons why I am willing to freely
share my diving experiences....I am neither proud, nor ashamed of my
diving history. I have learned a lot from my mistakes, and as I've said
in previous messages, in a field where mistakes are as costly as they are
in deep-diving activities, I feel it is important for people to learn from
others' mistakes as well.

You think *I've* got an interesting reality......I'd like to introduce you
sometime to some of the commercial divers I know (reef divers, not
hard-had divers)! Talk about polar perspectives on reality!

I know and am friends with a number of respected hyperbaric physicians; and
I know and am firends with a lot of respected deep divers. Each group is
comprised of experts in their respective fields, but there are VERY FEW
people who have successfully bridged the gap (there are a few....but they
are exceedingly rare). The former group knows a lot about laboratory
experiments, physiology, physics, biochemistry, etc.; and is generally
constantly exposed to real-human tragedies on a regular basis (bends
victims). The latter group knows a lot about field tests (themselves &
their buddies as Guinea Pigs) and a lot of hard-core "realities", but
aren't constantly exposed to young healthy people whose lives have been
dramtically and negatively impacted by a crippling DCS hit. Both groups
have important information to contribute to the prevention of future
tragedies. Forums like this are EXTREMELY helpful for allowing each side
to communicate with each other - both sides have MUCH to learn from each
other!

I just hope we can all openly and honestly share our own insights &
perspectives without obsticles like ego & pride getting in the way.

Aloha,

Rich

P.S. Ya' see Chris! I just don't have the time right now to keep up this
level of on-line communication! I'll continue to do the best I can...but
right now, I'm late for dinner....;-)
