Hello Trish, I'm not an explorer, just a little cave diver. I praciced martial arts for a few years and my opinion is that it gives you the ability to react to emergencies by bringing up pre-acquired procedures or reflexes without delay and without having to go through a long decision making process. I believe that this process can be better learned by practicing martial arts because your response must be immediate and precise. In addition, knowing that you can deal with emergency situations somehow prevents you from panicking. I Had personnaly two Ultralight plane engine failures, the first one at 500 feet; I surprisingly and gratefully found myself managing to " crash the right way " very calmly. The plane was damaged but I had not even a bruise. My reaction to the second engine failure was just a thought " Shit, once again ". ( I had nothing to do with the causes of the failures) . Knowledge is what makes you better, for martial arts, diving or anything else. Not surprisingly, I find a lot of people with the same state of mind sharing the same passions and activities. Best regards Gil.
