Claudia,

Interesting question. I cave in the Yucatan frequently, and I've dived =
with many women there both students and experienced cavers. I agree with =
Perry's observations that most women are more thorough and grounded with =
respect to the preparation and execution of fundamentals related to =
caving. Many of the men I've observed are frequently too obsessed with =
the status and challenge. It appears to me from my experiences diving =
there that women observe the actual caves better. They can more =
accurately describe where we've been and observed waypoints or exits, =
while men seem more focused on the end of the line. Additionally, women =
don't seem to silt it up as frequently as aggressive male divers do.=20

If you've been caving in Mexico you know that there are many competent =
women cave trainers there and several of the original cave explorers =
were women. Women like Kate Lewis and Kay Walton have been prominent =
contributors to many of the exploration projects.
