Subject: JJ's statement on standards
Date: Mon, 10 Apr 2000 13:42:52 +0100
JJ is currently teaching in Germany and has had a difficult time reading and
responding to mail about Mike Bruic's policy statement or questions raised
about GUE standards. He's asked me to make sure that his notes make it onto
the list-- he's had time between classes to write the short response below
and he is sending a longer response to this list later. He is also sending
me a longer policy statement that I am to post to the GUE website. If he
finishes it tonight I should be able to get it up on www.gue.com sometime
tomorrow.

Subject: GUE standards

Hello all,

I am currently traveling in Europe doing instruction and have not been able
to read or respond to the recent notes generated by Mike Bruic's decision to
require GUE membership or training at Madison Blue. I will be responding to
a larger number of related issues soon, but first I want to directly address
Tom Mount's questioning of GUE's standards. Tom, we have known each other
for nearly ten years. You have all of my personal contact information, and
you know that I have never been subscribed to these lists. If you are
interested in discussing any aspect of training or GUE just let me know
through direct contact. I am always happy to hear from you. I will be able
to post the instructors' standards in the near future. It is on the long
list of to do's. It really seemed to us there were more pressing tasks to
accomplish, but I will bump it up in priority.

There seems to be a lot of talk about printed standards among agencies, but
in my experience most organizations rarely actual practice what they print.
For example, what are TDI's instructor standards? I don't know-- but I
became an Trimix Instructor Trainer several years ago on a cellular phone
call with Brett. We had never met and he knew next to nothing about me. He
only asked that I pay the dues before the card would be on its way. How can
this happen, particularly at the instructor trainer level? More importantly
how can it happen so often?

I am constantly being told of instructors around the world who have received
or been offered certifications without any particular effort or skill
demonstration, let alone fitness qualification. While in Germany for the
last week I have a half dozen stories that make one cringe.

I have always liked you, Tom, and gotten along well with you. However, your
pronouncement that IANTD requires a yearly physical fitness evaluation for
instructors doesn't reflect accurately my personal experience. I do not know
one instructor from any agency that has ever been required to complete any
type of fitness test for a requalification. I also do not know of a single
technical diving instructor (save our own GUE instructors) that has ever
done any
sort of fitness test prior to becoming being certified.

As for standards and GUE's dedication to quality education, please watch in
the next day for a more detailed posting on GUE's website. I did not want to
post a book-length post to the list. Interested parties can visit
www.gue.com/classroom/ for more information. I will attempt to respond to
any questions cc'd to me in as timely a manner as possible. I will be
traveling in Croatia next week and I am uncertain of access but will do my
best to engage any relevant discussions.

Have a great week.
