In a good soldered joint, the wire and the terminal form a metallic alloy at the interface between them. This takes heat. The solder is actually just a heat transfer medium, to get the heat into the mechanical joint and help with the alloying process. (My source on this is my father, from his early days at Boeing, when they brought in some of the REAL experts to teach soldering. Might have been NASA, might have been someone else.)
