A massive sea, air and ground search continued Thursday for =
two Colorado women who disappeared while scuba diving in Caribbean =
waters off the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico.=20
=20
Janie McKibbon, 52, and Regena Hale, 50, became separated =
from four diving partners and an instructor just before noon Tuesday =
while exploring a coral reef about 300 yards from the shore.=20
=20
The women were novices but were certified divers. McKibbon =
and Hale are counselors at the Lookout Mountain Youth Services Center in =
Golden, a state detention facility for about 160 teenage boys.=20
=20
The missing pair were among a party of nine Colorado women =
who were on vacation on the island of Cozumel since last Friday.=20
=20
"They came down on a girls' trip to spend some time together =
and enjoy the sun," said Renee Applegate, owner of Dive Paradise, the =
local scuba company that headed the group's dive.=20
=20
Applegate said the two women were diving in about 60 feet of =
water Tuesday with four friends and a dive master when they signaled =
that they were going to the surface. The five other divers remained in =
the water for about another two minutes before heading for the dive =
boat, she said.=20
=20
"Those two waved goodbye and headed for the service; the =
rest of the group was watching them go to the surface, and that's the =
last time they saw them," Applegate said.=20
=20
When the dive master and boat captain noticed that McKibbon =
and Hale hadn't surfaced, the dive master went back into the water, and =
the captain sent out a radio call that they were missing, Applegate =
said.=20
=20
About a half-dozen dive boats in the area immediately began =
searching Tuesday, but the women had vanished.=20
=20
Currents were strong Tuesday but not out of the ordinary, =
Applegate said.=20
=20
Since then, the Mexican navy, planes, a helicopter and even =
police combing beaches have joined the search. About 50 boats were =
searching for the missing women Thursday.=20
=20
Applegate said the rescuers still have hope.=20
=20
"If they turn up on the coast, on one side or the other, it =
could be a recovery of someone alive," she said. "If they are still in =
the sea, it is grim."=20
