Christina, all kidding aside - proper gear balance is the correct answer, not more gear to offset doing something stupid. I do more ocean diving than cave diving, and more deep ocean diving than anyone on this list ever has done in their collective lives, and quite a bit of it looking for the bodies of those who were diving with an unbalanced rig and screwball wing schemes. In fact, finding bodies is the only reason good enough to get me to do it anymore - it is stupid, stupid, and more stupid, and incredibly stupid done the way you say it is being taught. I dive aluminum 80's and a weight belt and/or a cave light with a wet suit, and can drop the belt if I need to get up for any reason, like loss of gas, loss of hoses, etc. When diving steel I have a drysuit with its own inflation. Big steel tanks on a boat are dumb. 80's with an 80 stage solves the hoovery problem, the multiple dive problems, and when you need to walk around a pitching deck, or take your tanks off in the water, you will appreciate the lighter aluminums. Trying to manage a mess like double wings or inflators is patently ridiculous, and extremely dangerous in my well informed and seasoned opinion. Trying to teach pigs to sing in deep water is the excuse most often proferred by our fine instuctional community, the mental equivalent of roofers or car wash monkees, and I do not pay much attention to what they have to say in diving or at the car wash. Obvious is obvious, and what it most obvious here is that we have idiots dispening dive advice at the key levels - a real shame. Good thing there are a few good ones out there, and good thing there is an alternative to the bullshit - G.U.E. I got lucky and drew good ones from O/W to cave. Clearly you did not, but it is not too late to go find out the real deal. You're missing the freedom of diving the DIR way.
