Subject: compass and depth gauge

Hi folks...

I recall a discussion on this subject about a couple of years ago... I went
through the archives and found some very interesting data, but I still have
some questions...

I will give my background first, in order to let you know which is my
current degree of knowledge... I have been surveying in dry caving for the
last six years and my Caving Club is responsible for 30~40km/year of BCRA 5B
surveys... I was personally involved in the developing of the all the
present technics we use today. My personal choice of compass is for suunto's
KB-14, balanced for zone 3, even though I also own a very similar Brunton
model and a french Axium...

Since I took up cave diving, my main objectives were all toward underwater
survey... It was very easy to adapt our current procedures to use underwater
(wow! you have a _physical_ survey line...), but our biggest barrier to
achieve the BCRA 5 grade was in the quality of the instruments...

So, does anybody have any experience using a digital compass that is
accurate to 1 degree?? I also learned that George and the WKPP are being
succesfull using Suunto forestry models... could you guys please tell me
which is the model?? If it is something similar to the KB-14, how do you use
it without reading through the window?

Also, any tips in a very precise depth gauge would be of great use...

greetings from Brasil,

Danilo Allegrini
