Bill,
   I allways have two ways to gain bouyancy: drysuit, BC, liftbag.  I don't 
plan on ditching gear, but that MIGHT be a last resort; I would have to lose 
the anchor line (most of the open water dives have one) and everybody else 
I'm diving with.
