Robert
=20
The MOD only does not specify the mix
=20
The MOD is visible to the buddy but not as apparent to the diver, as it =
runs length wise down the cylinder
=20
The IANTD labels per standards going into effect 1 May all of this is =
listed in the standards I posted with the original response to Bill
IANTD labeling
Has a type gas identifier these include Oxygen, Nitrox, Deco Gas and =
Breathing gases other than air . With the exception of the Nitrox label =
all of these state mix and MOD. When the Nitrox label is used a separate =
MOD is recorded
=20
2. A tape label is affixed to the neck of the cylinder so the diver can =
read it, this tape is for the diver to be able to glance down and see =
as well as visible with the bottle upright when stowed on a boat
=20
3. We have labels now that run length on the cylinders with MOD in large =
letters, some of these labels have a fixed MOD, some allow the diver to =
write in the MOD
  A. We allow the cylinder to be painted with MOD should the diver =
prefer=20
=20
4. A protective device is worn over the mouthpiece of the hottest mix.
=20

In training our mixtures and tables are not the same as used by WKPP and =
there is no reason why they should be.
=20
We do have fixed MOD labels for the depths we use on our tables and the =
mixes we use.We have MOD labels that may be filled in for other mixtures
=20
So the fact that we label MOD with a blue label instead of paint makes =
ours less safe than yours , you must be kidding.
=20
The fact that we do multifaceted methods of ensuring the diver knows =
both mix and MOD is less safe than what you advocate again where is the =
logic in that
=20
The fact that we require a protective device over the mouthpiece is less =
safe than your single MOD painted cylinder You really must be kidding =
Robert
=20
We have multi indications of both mix and MOD and you have only one and =
you argue that ours is less safe, repeat that to yourself and see just =
how humorous it sounds.
=20
You argue what a lawyer will say guess what I bet you will find your =
system, that list only MOD and only on the side of a cylinder, far more =
at risk from a legal perspective in event of an accident than ours.=20
=20
=20
As you know all standards we now produce are sent for legal review prior =
to being presented.=20
We are more than confident that with the minor modification /additions =
this year that our labeling and cylinder identification is by far the =
safest to be found.
=20
=20
Now whatever I state you guys will argue over (even if I were to say Hi =
Guys somehow it would be offensive to you, and I really do not care , I =
do care about diver safety just as our entire BOA and licensees do and =
that is how we structure our programs.=20
There is no need for me to continue in this discussion so please remove =
me from the CC list. I have replied to the original post by Bill and I =
have addressed your opinion about the single MOD Vs our method of =
listing MOD, mix, and gas identifiers.
=20
You will continue your process we will do what we feel is much safer =
than just a MOD without a current mix labeled on it. You trust the diver =
to always have an identical mix we assume they may not thus mix and MOD =
are required and will continue to be so.=20

Robert if you truly believe that MOD painted on the cylinder is all =
that is needed why is it that when I have dived from your facility you =
guys have taken tape and wrote mix on it Seems like you also wish to =
verify both from your own facility. When you do that your system really =
is not much different.
=20

Have fun, be safe and go diving
Respectfully yours,
Tom Mount

    Tom,

    =20

MOD labeling is the only identification that makes complete sense. =
MOD labeling is clear, direct, and demands only the absolute minimum =
in-water interpretation by the diver for safe in-water use. Your method =
may have been the best when it stood alone as the only standardized =
system, but is clearly flawed.

    =20

After George and I recovered Jane Ornsteins body an opined that your =
bottle marking was a major factor in her consumption of 900 psi of =
=93DECO gas=94 (80/20 nitrox) from 130~up, I thought you would =
=93advance safety=94 once again.

    =20

I will listen to you argue the =93extra bottles required for the MOD =
method=94 providing you use a notepad or perhaps a calculator. You will =
arrive at the simple conclusion of the same amount of bottles, =
regardless. It is as simple as 1 bottle for O2 (see baker=92s dozen on =
80/20), 1 bottle for 50% (70=92), and another for 35%~ (120=92). The =
120 MODottles also act as our standard single tank ocean dive bottles. =
We use the 190 bottles for our hyperoxic trimix dives beyond 100=92 as =
well as for deco. Since you do not see a need for 190 deco, this leaves =
you with a total need of 3 tanks dedicated to either DECO, single =
tanking, or shallow RB drive gas. How can you cut down on the number of =
bottles to do all your dives; basic, advanced, training or exploration?

    =20

    =93DECO GAS=94 (80/20) / =91NITROX=94 (21%-50%) marking leaves much =
to interpretation while requiring calculation for determination of what =
should have been on the bottle to start with, the only info needed-MOD =
(core, root, etc).=20

    =20

Visible by all members from afar, is yet another luxury/benefit =
afforded by the most simple of systems-MOD. When we found Jane in 260=92 =
of water, it was very difficult to tell the difference in gases (one on =
the left had 3000 psi of =93nitrox=94 while the one on her right had =
2100psi of =93deco mix=94. I suppose the lawyers will also have a field =
day given the fact that both =93NITROX=94 and =93DECO=94 are not spelled =
with the letter =93O=94, instead they have your circular LOGO. I can =
hear the plaintiff=92s counsel suggesting that you where more concerned =
about name recognition when INFORMATION exchange should have been the =
only goal. Apparently the other diver=92s in Jane=92s class (in 300=92 =
of water) did not take note that she was on =93DECO mix=94 for the 25 =
minute period ascending to the 30=92 gas switch. I stand by my argument =
that MOD shouts louder and provides instant information than an =
ambiguous collage of a decal with a logo in the middle. I can see =
exactly what gas my team member=92s are on without having to remind =
myself that I am looking at the opposite of what I am meant to be =
thinking (Jane=92s right was Dereck=92s left). TASK LOADING brings out =
the weaknesses in human factor compatibility, to the intelligent diver =
this means going to the core root of the problem and choosing =
SIMPLICITY.

    =20

If a simple system works on massive dives, basic dives, in all =
languages, with any diver, without calculation and is less expensive, =
why then is it not for =93training=94?

    =20

We can start a fund raiser to retire the excess decal=92s and help =
re-write that section of your manuals (save trees) if it would help, do =
I hear a second on this? If you accept simply acknowledge so by cross =
posting this note over to techdiver and the other various related sites =
where =93safety advances=94 via information exchange can be implemented =
immediately.=20

    =20

    Tom,

    =20

What is with you? No where in these standards can I find a mandate =
to paint 3" MOD numbers on both sides of the tanks. This system is so =
simple and so effective as to be almost self evident. Everyone =
understands the perfectly clear and sensible rationale for doing this. =
Why can't you simply place this requirement at or near the beginning of =
your list?

    =20

As for the student who unfortunately breathed the unmarked =
unanalyzed gas. This gas was described as "air" and was his "bailout". =
May I have the temerity to ask whose idea was it to bail out to "air". =
Was this the student's or Gurr's? Under the stressful conditions which =
might precipitate the need to bailout it would seem to me to be the last =
gas one would want to switch over to in a crisis situation. We all =
remember what happened to Rob Parker when he switched over to air deep =
and I am sure that Abner Chowdry remembers what happens under these =
circumstances all too well.

    =20

    Best regards,

    =20

    Bill

    Bill

What is with you. We do not allow as you accuse.=20

some idiot filled a cylinder labeled as air with a hot mix and left =
the air label on it. The diver had been using the same air cylinder all =
week as a bailout cylinder and had no reason to think someone would fill =
it with a hot mix.

    =20

If you dived a cylinder yesterday that had air in it and was labeled =
air and you left it at for instance at Brownies dive shop would you =
suspect overnight someone had changed the mix?

    =20

    As per IANTD mixing standards=20

LABELING BOTTOM MIX EANx MIXTURES WITH LESS THAN 41% OXYGEN

    1. Where applicable cylinders must be marked per legal =
requirements in addition to the below=20

    2. Cylinders painted yellow must be labeled with a 4 inches (10 =
centimeters) green band. The band must wrap around the tank starting at =
the flat of the cylinder. The label must state "Enriched Air Nitrox" (or =
an applicable acronym). IANTD has EANx decals available for labeling =
tanks.=20

    1. Cylinders painted with colors other than yellow require a 6 =
inches (15 centimeter) Enriched Air Nitrox band (decal) with the top 1 =
inch (2.5 centimeters) and the bottom 1 inch (2.5 centimeters) yellow. =
The middle of the band (decal) should be printed with a green background =
and the message, "Enriched Air Nitrox" (or an applicable acronym) =
printed in yellow for easy identification.=20

    2. Nitrox (EANx) cylinders must have Cylinder Contents Labels =
affixed to them. The Contents label must state the oxygen percentage =
currently in the cylinder and the Maximum Operating Depth (MOD). The =
label must be dated and signed by the person who purchased (or =
requested) the mix (verifying he/she confirmed the O2 percentage).=20

    a. This label may be a separate label, or part of the EANx band. =
IANTD has waterproof, reusable Cylinder Contents labels and cylinder =
content tape available for order.=20

    4. Nitrox (EANx) cylinders must have a current Visual Inspection =
(VIP) decal stated that oxygen-compatible lubricants have been used in =
the system (valve, tank neck, and/or cylinder). EANx cylinders used with =
EAN 41, or greater, or for direct partial pressure blending use, must =
have an Oxygen Service Rated VIP decal. IANTD has VIP decals (which also =
cover both tank and valve inspections) available for order.=20

    a. It is recommended that an additional label using one of the =
following options be used, these do not replace the requirement for the =
wrap around labels

I A Decal stating MOD to be placed length wise on the cylinder (IAND =
inc./IANTD has these with both a fixed=20

MOD plus blank ones for the user to fill in the MOD, these are blue =
with white lettering=20

II The MOD may also be painted on the cylinder

III A cylinder wrap suitable for regulator hose storage with the MOD =
boldly marked on it may also be used=20

(these are also available through IAND inc. / IANTD

    =20

    D. LABELING EANx AND DECOMPRESSION CYLINDERS (GREATER THAN 40%) AND =
OXYGEN (OR MIXTURES GREATER THAN 85% OXYGEN) MIXTURES

    1. Cylinders containing EAN 40 to 84 must have either a =
color-coded green and white label decal boldly stating, "Decompression =
Mix EAN* _____." or they may use the "Breathing Gases Other Than Air" =
decal that is red and white. (Note! This decal may be used with any gas =
mixture as long as the mix and MOD are filled in) This label must be 10 =
inches (25 centimeters) long and 4 inches (10 centimeters) wide. IANTD =
has Cylinder Contents labels available for order. * Or, equivalent =
acronym. These labels must be wrapped around the cylinder at the flat of =
the cylinder=20

    2. The decompression cylinder with the highest EANx mixture or =
oxygen must have some form of protective mechanism to prevent the diver =
from accidentally breathing from it. This may be a cover, bungie wrap or =
other suitable means. IAND inc. / IANTD has a protective device =
available=20

    3. All decompression cylinders must have a tape or label above =
the flat of the cylinder visible to the user with the mix or MOD or both =
marked. IAND inc. IANTD has these with pre marked mix and MOD as well as =
ones with blank spaces for the user to fill in.=20

    4. Cylinders containing oxygen levels of 85% or greater must =
adhere to one of the following:=20

    a. Be painted either green or white with the word oxygen and MOD =
20 fsw (6 msw) legible=20

    b. Have a 10 inches (25 centimeters) long by 4 inches (10 =
centimeters) wide green adhesive band decal with the word "OXYGEN" and =
MOD clearly and prominently printed in white on it. IANTD has waterproof =
Oxygen Cylinder Decals available for order.=20

    5. It is recommended that an additional label using one of the =
following options, these do not replace the requirement for the wrap =
around labels

I A Decal stating MOD to be placed length wise on the cylinder (IAND =
inc./IANTD has these with both a fixed=20

MOD plus blank ones for the user to fill in the MOD, these are blue =
with white lettering=20

II The MOD may also be painted on the cylinder

III A cylinder wrap suitable for regulator hose storage with the MOD =
boldly marked on it may also be used=20

(these are also available through IAND inc. / IANTD

    =20

    F. LABELING TRIMIX MIXTURES

    1. Cylinders containing Trimix must be labeled with the word, =
"Trimix", or "Breathing gas other than air". A Cylinder Contents Label =
or tape reflecting the percentages of Oxygen, and Helium must be affixed =
to the tank.=20
