I've managed somehow to get a spool to unreel on a dive before; if I
recall, the failure mode was that it wasn't wound tightly enough and the
line managed to pop over the rim of the spool and go from there.

I've also figured out that it's important to put the bolt snap onto the
loop on the end of the line before winding it the last few turns and
snapping into the spool, so that the end of the line is trapped between
the back side of the hook and the spool, away from the bolt; if you did
it the other way around the line could pull out between the end of the
bolt and the hook face, but doing it right is fortunately the more
natural way to wind up a spool. Also, keeping it in a drysuit pocket
protects it from bumps. Are there any other "tricks of the trade" with
these things?
