I just returned from an excursion to Akumal Mexico and wanted to report some of my experiences. I dove out of Buddy Quattlebaum's Dos Ojos Dive Center. He offers rentals of doubles with two fills per day for the low price of $15.00 per day. He can also put you in contact with inexpensive lodging and provide info on van rentals and/or jungle transportation to the dive sites he operates. His Web Site is http://www.dosojos.com/ . For those who would like to take your own vehicle with you there is a Ferry operating between Tampa and Progreso -- their introductory price is $144 per person round trip. Their Web Site is http://www.yucatancruises.com/ . I found Buddy to be very helpful in planning my local dives and was quite taken with his new dive site Bat Cave -- which is a short swim from Dos Ojos. From there I did several dives downstream and upstream including the typical traverse from Dos Ojos to Monolito. This dive can be extended another 1.5 hours by going from Monolito to Hilario's Well. This latter traverse involves three challenging restrictions and was totally new to me. Since the depth averages slightly under 30 feet, the whole traverse from Bat Cave to Hilario's Well can be made with doubles and a single stage bottle. The local food is inexpensive by US standards and quite good. Cherpas can be hired at reasonable rates for the more adventurous dives that involve 1 or 2 hour treks through the jungle.
